Bumps!

“There’s only one way out now!” - fatalistic advice from one of Sinead’s work colleagues. With six months gone, Sinead’s starting to sport a lovely bump. She’s here with her workmate who is due two weeks later. She’s bearing up in the way that women do - without drama and self-searching and grand plans. The dad to be is a bit less sane (generally and specifically). In a loving gesture, Sinead bought me a book called “Fatherhood: The Truth” a slightly sardonic glimpse at what’s to come. If you’re a little weak in the stomach and are expecting your first child DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. The description of labor scared me to death. Let’s not even talk about what happens after that.

One of the things about expecting a baby is you start to be aware of pregnant people everywhere. My friends Alex and Nichole are expecting their second. Sinead’s workmate Lily is expecting her first. Apparently, our friends Chris and Andrea are expecting in September (need to confirm this). My friends Peter and Rebecca just had their first (a boy) on Monday. I saw Peter today and asked him how it was in the delivery room REALLY. My expectation, of course, being that he would assuage my fears with new Papa platitudes, colored with the happy glow that one often sees in new parents. That was not the case...

There’s only one way out now. Here’s a video of Sinead and Lily pretending to be penguins.
