New (To Me) Music: Powersolo and The Weber Brothers

January 6th, 2008 · 3 Comments · MP3s, Music

Ran across a couple of bands - both brother acts- I hadn’t heard before during my trip back across the Atlantic this holiday season.
Powersolo is a Danish punk trio founded by the guitar playing Jeppesen brothers. Musically, these guys are pretty good - hearkening back to an early 90’s grungy blues sensibility reminiscent of Jon Spencer’s Blues Explosion, Southern Culture on the Skids and even a little Mudhoney. Things fall apart lyrically however as Powersolo’s fairly obvious homage to white trash rockabilly acts like SCOTS falls well short and comes off as crass and juvenile.Maybe the humor is lost in translation from Danish. “Kat Nazer (Powersoul)” is my favorite track from Powersolo’s latest - “It’s Raceday…” available from Amazon and Powersolo - It's Raceday ...and Your Pu..y Is Gut!!!.

The Weber Brothers are a Canadian based roots rock outfit centered around Maryland born brothers Ryan and Sam. If you didn’t know that there were Canadian roots-rock bands either, then you weren’t alone. I got my hands on a live recording they made at the Gordon Best theater in Peterborough during my trip to the Frozen north. Live records are rarely very compelling or musically dynamic, and this one is no exception. The Weber Brothers would be pretty standard blues-rock fare if not for Jim Usher’s sax, which really ramps things up a notch on the live record. See what you think of the Weber Brothers on “Struggle, Struggle, Struggle”. If you like what your hear, their latest record is available from their website.

A final note - the Athens, Georgia based Drive-by Truckers have a new record coming out later this month. “Brighter Than the Creation’s Dark” is the first DBT record without Jason Isbell and features the return of original trucker John Neff. David over at Houston Ramblings is streaming the new record so head over and check it out.

    Um, yeah.

So, what do you suppose is in their pockets?

I was waiting for ‘I got pain in the ass.’

Looks like you came back from Canada with more than a cold and some great memories. You found some new music too.

[…] I seem to have become some kind of correspondent for the Danish music scene since my review of a strange Danish punk band after Christmas. Now, a Danish act doesn’t really belong in a post about Sweden as the Danes […]
