Interesting blog !.... I got here for a google search after reading something on yahoo about the neanderthals.
There are lots of people today that have a similar appearance to the neanderthals so I would say some of the genes are still among us. It says they dissapeard about 2-3k years after the modern human came like ~40,000 ago. Where the heck did the modern human come from like that out of nowhere....or where they all in one place then started moving places and got to the neanderthals?..

The facial images and redddish hair postulation of neanderthals is interesting. These same swarthy distinctive features are noted in certain populations of north eastern england, e.g. around Newcastle on Tyne. Has there ever been any research into a genetic connection between the two groups. It seems odd that within a general anglo saxon heritage, we have this distinct group which may have originated from some very early migration event.

Just dropped by out of a Google search. I wasn't searching for Neanderthals, but I saw the image that led me here, and I found your post on the subject fascinating. I'm ghost-writing a book involving Neanderthals who survived in a community beneath volcanic mountains in the Koryak region of Siberia - and I've been struggling with the form of communication. Your post seems to indicate that - if the DNA isn't corrupted by time, that there may have been more similarity to human speech capabilities than was believed... It doesn't solve my problem, but it starts wheels spinning. And what a fascinating blog...

Who knew genetic researchers listened to The Replacements?
